GOLUSHKEVICH
Sergey Sergeyevich

Sergey Sergeyevich Golushkevich was born in 1903 in Mogilyov, in the family of a priest. He graduated from school in 1920, Leningrad Polytechnical Institute civil-engineeribg faculty in 1928. Studying in the institute, he earned his living with private tutoring. S.S.Golushkevich's first cientific work on the bending moment influence lines in continuous beams was published in "Leningrad Polytechnical Institute Transactions" in 1925 (he was yet a student) on his teacher, academician B.G.Galerkin's recommendation.

After graduation S.S.Golushkevich worked in construction companies in Leningrad, particulary, in the Institute of Structures. Simultaniously since 1930 S.S.Golushkevich teached structural mechanics in the Industrial Construction Engineers Institute at first as assistant lecturer, later - as assistant professor. Since 1939 S.S.Golushkevich is a teacher of the Navy Military-Construction School (senior teacher, later - professor, head of the department and colonel). In 1945 - 1955 Sergey Sergeyevich Golushkevich simultaniously supervised the Leningrad Polytechnical Institute structural mechanics and theory of elasticity department. The course of pivot systems structural mechanics, developed by S.S.Golushkevich, played an important role in the pedagogical activities of the department. Some department's manuals for students, published already after his death, were based on his course.

In S.S.Golushkevich's works engineering and scientific ideas were naturally combined. He supervised numerous projects of buildings in Leningrad development, particulary, the building of the tube-casting plant, the governmental House of Soviets in Moskovskiy prospect and others.

S.S.Golushkevich's had various scientific interests, but researches in soil mechanics hold a special place in his activities. For his monography "A flat problem of loose medium equilibrium limit" S.S.Golushkevich was awarded a premium, named after academician Galerkin.

During the Blockade of Leningrad (World War II) S.S.Golushkevich's works, devoted to plates on the elastic basement analysys, were applied in the organizing of an ice road via Ladoga lake. S.S.Golushkevich has determined the admissible ice thickness and went across the lake on the first machine. This operation was the first successful transport operation of such kind in the whole hisory of military campaigns (for example, an attempt to organize an ice road between Sweeden and Finland via the Botnic Gulf ice during the war in 1939-1940 was unsuccessful). Computations, made for this operation, became the basis of S.S.Golushkevich's doctoral thesis (1945).

Manuals on S.S.Golushkevich's method Sergey Sergeyevich Golushkevich has developed elegant and efficient graphical method for statically indeterminate beams and frames analysis. Unfortunatelly this method was published only in the transactions of Leningrad Industrial Construction Institute (1937, issue 4), and it is not widely known even to specialists in structural mechanics, especially now, when graphical and graphoanalitical methods of structures and constructions analysis are replaced by numerical methods. Nevertheless, years after S.S.Golushkevich's death in 1956, his disciples A.Y.Golovin, I.A.Konstantinov and M.V.Nikolayeva published a book "Statically indeterminate beams and frames analysis, using S.S.Golushkevich's graphical method" (1972), which occured to be very usefull for hydrotechnical faculty students, who studied structural mechanics.
